Satoshi Nakamoto is a person or group of people who created the Bitcoin protocol and reference software, Bitcoin Core. In 2008, Nakamoto published a paper[1][2] on The Cryptography Mailing list at[3] describing the Bitcoin digital currency. Bitcoin was launched in 2009 by the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto, whose true identity has not been confirmed.  We do not know whether this is a real name or a pseudonym, or how many people the name represents.



Bitcoin is not run through a central bank.  It is supported by a peer to peer network of computers. This network is responsible for both transferring bitcoin as well as creating new bitcoin.


At inception it was decided that the supply of Bitcoin would be limited to 20 million.  There are currently just over 13 million in circulation
