The Finance Guy is now up to day 3 of the Pro Blogger Build a Better Blog Challenge.. We started the challenge 6 days ago and are now on day 3. That is one of the great things about taking an online and podcast course. We can do it in our own time at our own pace.
The task for today is to get off our blog, and work on promotional activities . This is something we already do a bit with this website, but there's always room for improvement. For today's challenge, we posted our list post from day 2 in a linkedin group about blogging. We also took an extra step and searched out a Google+ Community for bloggers, which we also shared our post with.
What Did we Learn Today
After listenin to the day 3 Podcast of the PBBB Challenge, we feel like we have picked up some more useful hints and tips around building a readership, and promoting our blog. Quality content by itself will not drive traffic to your site. You need to get out there and promote it.
Today we started off with some hints and tips for bringing traffic to your site. We covered the 6 points for building readership which are:
1. Define Your Readers
Put simply this comes down to knowing your audience. What demographic are you trying to write for? What is their age? Where are they located? What motivates them? What questions do they want answered? The more you know about your target market, the better equipped you are to create content they will read.
2. Create Something Worth being Found
Now that you know your customer, create something they will want. Don't be just another carbon copy of what's already out there. Be original, with your content, your brand and your design. Stand out from the crowd, be memorable.
3. Shareable Content
Creating content that your readers share, is vital to growing your readership. As we learned on Day 2 - List Posts tend to get shared a lot. This doesn't mean every post should be a list post, but it is a good idea to use them strategically to help build shareable posts.
4. Get Off Your Blog
This is the focal point of today's podcast. Find places where your readers gather, and share your content on these places. It could be online forums, social networks, or even in the real world. We shared our post about blogging with a linked in group dedicated to blogging. Spending time out there promoting your blog is an important activity if you want to build a readership
5. Looking After Your Readers
Encourage feedback. Answer their questions. Create content that addresses their niche interests. More detail will come later in the PBBB Challenge
6. Build a Sticky Blog
This will also come later in the PBBB Challenge, but it refers to building a blog which readers will like enough to come back to.
How Should We Promote our Blog?
The podcast covers many ways to promote your blog, but here are the ones which made it onto our note pad and into our memory.
This is a great way to share posts with people you already know. You can also reach new readers if you find communal areas in social media where your readers might be found.
In the past this was done for SEO reasons. Changes to the algorithm mean that this is no longer the case. Guest posting is still a great way to get in front of potential readers. Specially if your guest post has a link to one of your own posts which may be relevant to the same topic. Guest posts also help build your reputation on the subject.
Find forums which are related to your subject matter. Be careful not to spam, but where possible share content that is relevant and useful to the forum discussion. Sharing posts is better than sharing your homepage, as they are more likely to be read.
Speak at Live Events
Run a workshop, or volunteer to teach a class at your local library. Speaking to people is a great way to build your reputation and get them interested in your website.
Comment on Other Blogs
Another way to build your reputation is to add valuable comments on other blogs in the same niche market. This may also help build relationships with those blogs for future guest posts. Be careful not to spam
Submit Content to Mainstream Media
This is something The Finance Guy has done in the past, but it was before we had this website... It's a great way to build credibility and get yourself in front of new readers.
This is something that we have been planning to do for a while, so watch this space. An interview can be a great opportunity for cross promotion.
What Day 4 Has Shown Us
Promotions are an essential part of building a successful blog. This is something which we The Finance Guy has been doing, but as with all aspects it is also something which can be done better.
One area we are definitely interesting in pursuing is: Public Speaking opportunities. This could be simultaneously beneficial to both our website and our real life job. A free talk is a great way to attract people who are interested in our content. People in Western Australia, be on the lookout for a Finance Guy talk coming soon :)
